Avengers: Infinity War is the first of a two-part series of films that will conclude the current phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In fact, these movies may retire some characters we’ve gotten to know since the first MCU movie a decade ago, 2008’s Iron Man. At this point, dozens of Marvel heroes and villains have appeared in this film saga, which will have surpassed 20 movies by the time Avengers: Infinity War’s currently untitled sequel is released in May 2019.
Following in the footsteps of 2012’s The Avengers and 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War puts the Avengers alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy as they attempt to stop Thanos. Hailing from Titan, Thanos seeks to collect all the Infinity Stones and complete the Infinity Gauntlet to become omnipotent. Here’s everything you need to know in the lead-up to what is poised to be the biggest movie of 2018.
Avengers: Infinity War is on track to beat Star Wars for all-time best opening weekend

Marvel StudiosAvengers: Infinity War is probably going to smash the record for biggest opening weekend. Full sales figures will be known on Monday.

Bucky Barnes has ... some issues. Tigh Walker/Marvel ComicsAvengers: Infinity War is the culmination of 10 years of blockbuster filmmaking, the fusion of more than a half-dozen separate sub-franchises with their own lead heroes. Before it hits screens, you might need a recap on all of that history.
Or, you might just want to know where all the main characters are right now, without all that baggage. Fortunately, Marvel has released a duo of comics called Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War Prelude, which shows us what (almost) every Avenger has been doing in their downtime.

Marvel StudiosAvengers: Infinity War press screenings are done, reviews written, red carpet events over — and that means the internet is about to become a cesspool of spoilers.
It’s practically unavoidable and impractical to avoid going online until the movie’s out this Friday, April 27. But we also loathe having to change the way we use our most frequented websites just to guarantee a spoiler-free movie-watching experience. Alas, this is the state of the internet. We’re in the final week of pre-release marketing before Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters, and that means film footage galore.
We may not point out every new TV spot (so many have popped up in the past couple of days alone), but footage aired during Good Morning America earlier today is the exception to the rule. The scene pits Captain America and Black Widow against a couple Black Order members — the elite group of followers handpicked by Thanos to help take out the Avengers.

Disney/Marvel StudiosAvengers: Infinity War isn’t just Marvel Studios’ “most ambitious crossover.” It also represents the Marvel Cinematic Universe being around for an entire decade.
That means there are plenty of details to remember from some of Marvel’s lesser loved films (looking at you, Thor: The Dark World), and fans who have been around since the very beginning are looking for ways to pay tribute to some of their favorite moments (looking at you, shawarma scene at the end of The Avengers). Fortunately, there’s already an abundance of tributes and recaps floating around YouTube; in fact, there may be too many for any one person to sift through.

Disney/Marvel StudiosAvengers: Infinity War directors the Russo brothers have put to rest a persistent fan rumor — or maybe a fan hope — that the closing credits of the upcoming Avengers team movie will reveal the name of the untitled movie known only as Avengers 4.
“It’s going to be quite a long while before people see that title,” Joe Russo told Yahoo Movies. “We need people to see this movie, digest this movie, and then we can tell them what the next story is they’re going to see.”

Chuck Zlotnick/Marvel StudiosLet’s not beat around the bush: Steve Rogers’ new Avengers: Infinity War look is pretty great. The beard, in conjunction with the whole rough-and-tumble worn-out uniform thing? It’s working — it’s working so well that Cap’s beard itself was the most talked-about part of Infinity War’s promotion according to social media analysts.
But there’s more to Infinity War’s Captain America than just aesthetics. It signals a major shift in Steve Rogers’ story that reverberates down to the core tenets of his character — a departure from his starched red-white-and-blue cleanliness. As Hannibal Buress deadpanned in Spider-Man: Homecoming, “I’m pretty sure that guy’s a war criminal now.” And all of this in conjunction with actor Chris Evans’ recent announcement that he plans on stepping back from the character in the next year — well, it’s safe to say Cap’s in a bit of a weird spot.

Marvel isn’t letting up on marketing for Avengers: Infinity War anytime soon.
A new teaser for Infinity War centers around Wakanda, and some of its most recognizable superhero faces. Bucky Barnes, who was spotted at the end of Black Panther in a final post-credits scene, is present and finally reuniting with his former best friend, Steve Rogers, aka Captain America. Their reunion is adorable and sweet, but doesn’t detract from the reason the Captain and his Avengers friends are visiting Wakanda in the first place — Thanos.

But the attention isn’t on Evans’ beautiful blue peepers — though they do pop quite nicely from the dark tones of the poster, don’t they?

Marvel StudiosLoki has played a crucial role in the long-term storyline of the Avengers films — and, by extension, much of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — having originally been sent to collect the Tesseract for Thanos in 2012’s The Avengers.
That didn’t go so well — which led to Thanos being told that the humans wouldn’t easily be conquered — but a new detail helps to shed some light on where the relationship between the two characters goes from there.

They got this man a shield. Marvel Studios/DisneyThanks to last night’s Super Bowl spot for Avengers: Infinity War, we now have two trailers for the epic team up movie — and that’s enough to start drawing parallels. Namely: What’s up with Captain America’s shield?
Both trailers have taken time to highlight the good Captain’s reliance on a defensive object as his primary weapon — and that he’s not working with his usual kit in Infinity War. Last year’s first trailer gave Black Panther a big impressive line about it, as Wakanda prepared for an (apparent) alien invasion.

Marvel EntertainmentWhen people first saw the trailer for Avengers: Infinity War, there were two immediate, almost unanimous reactions: one of these heroes was going to die and Thanos’ new look was pretty gross.
The former assessment led to conversations about which superheroes would end up sacrificing themselves for the greater good, but it was the latter opinion that led to the newest Marvel Studios meme. The faces of popular cartoon characters, including Homer Simpson and Hank Hill from King of the Hill, have been ‘shopped on Thanos’ face.
