The Pokémon Go community is best defined by two things: its eternal dissatisfaction with the blockbuster mobile game, and its appreciation for a good joke. Following this week’s mega update, which adds 80 new Pokémon into the mix, players have pelted the game’s developer with a humorous request that highlights that latter trait.
Although Pokémon Go is only now getting the bulk of the second Pokémon generation, players are already asking for even more new Pokémon. A common refrain on Pokémon Go’s and the series’ social media accounts is now “gen 3” — as in, add in the third generation monsters already.

@Pokemon Ok now where's gen 3?

The third generation of games, which spans Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, remains popular with many players. Some of the franchise’s most popular monsters — and memes — came from that generation, and they continue to be referenced today.

@Pokemon I saw azurill does this mean some new Pokémon might be from gen 3?

That’s a big reason why players are invoking gen three as a joke, but their affection for the next batch of monsters isn’t all for laughs. The recent third generation remakes, Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, rekindled affection for the Hoenn region and its inhabitants, so many younger players or more recent Pokémon converts are more familiar with those characters than the 80 new ones now in the game.
It’s unlikely that we’ll see gen three Pokémon in Pokémon Go anytime soon, considering how long it took to get the second generation in there. As bigger gen two fans, we’re personally okay with the wait — plus more new Pokémon is better than none either way.
