Suicide Squad officially became an Oscar award-winning movie on Sunday, much to the chagrin of cinephiles everywhere.
It didn’t take long after the movie was announced as the recipient of the Oscar for Best Hair and Makeup for people to point out Suicide Squad officially had more Academy Awards than some of the most celebrated movies, directors and actors in Hollywood. From Charlie Chaplin to Harrison Ford, Amy Adams to Sigourney Weaver.
Do the Right Thing, Boogie Nights, Taxi Driver and The Shawshank Redemption are all examples of films that were snubbed by the Academy during their eligible years, too. And while Suicide Squad wasn’t competing for Best Picture, the perceived injustice of the occasion was noted by many.
At the time of this writing it should be noted that Suicide Squad had the same amount of Oscars as La La Land, the film poised to sweep the entire show with a total of 14 nominations.

Before La La Land won its first award of the night, around 10:15 p.m., people were quick to jump on the fact that Suicide Squad had beaten out La La Land. La La Land, which won its first award for Production Design but lost out in categories like Sound Editing (the winner: Arrival), was slated to be one of the biggest Oscar-winning movies of all time. Halfway through the award show, it seems like that may not be the case after all.
La La Land, which has been a controversial movie since it was released, has garnered quite a bit of hate online, and Oscars viewers were ready to jump on the fact that in the moment, it was coming short of to Suicide Squad; a movie that was nominated at the Razzies, an award show celebrating the “worst” movies of the year.
SUICIDE SQUAD currently has more Oscars than LA LA LAND and, tbh, i'm more than happy about this small sliver of history we're living in— Kevin Cookman (@KevinKacman) February 27, 2017

Suicide Squad debuted to a 26 percent rating from critics when it was released last August. Those involved with the film, including Jared Leto and director David Ayer, have spoken out about issues involving the movie and what they would change if they could redo it.
Suicide Squad, unfortunately, was not nominated for Best Picture.
