Pre-order Psychonauts VR and get the original game

Rhombus of Ruin will bridge the gap between the original and the sequel, due out in 2018

Charlie Hall is Polygon’s tabletop editor. In 10-plus years as a journalist & photographer, he has covered simulation, strategy, and spacefaring games, as well as public policy.

Customers who pre-order Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin will receive the original cult classic, Psychonauts, for PlayStation 4. Subscribers to Sony’s PlayStation Plus service will also get an additional 10 percent off the title.

Rhombus of Ruin will cost $19.99, and will only work with PlayStation VR. The game will bridge the gap between the original game, first released in 2005, and the upcoming Psychonauts 2.

“Players will assume the role of Raz, an intrepid young psychic and now fully fledged member of the Psychonauts,” developer Double Fine said in a release. “The story picks up exactly where it left off at the end of Psychonauts — with Raz, Lili, Sasha, Milla, and Coach Oleander flying off to rescue Truman Zannotto, the Grand Head of the Psychonauts.

Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin will be played in first-person, and allow players to experience the game’s classic powers for themselves. They include clairvoyance, telekinesis and pyrokinesis. The game also includes the original voice actors Richard Horvitz and Nicki Rapp, and features music from original composer Peter McConnell.

“Their mission takes them straight into the heart of the Rhombus of Ruin — a mysterious part of the ocean as deadly as two Bermuda Triangles back to back! When the rescue party itself is kidnapped and held prisoner in the Rhombus, Raz is immobilized and must use only his psychic powers to reunite his friends, reveal the identity of the mysterious kidnapper, and free Truman before the madness of the Rhombus consumes all their minds.”

Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin will be released Feb. 21 on PlayStation VR.
