Nintendo’s newest entry in The Legend of Zelda series does away with many of the series’ longest-held conventions, but some of the company’s scrapped ideas for Breath of the Wild were truly ... well, wild.
At the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco today, Nintendo designer Satoru Takizawa showed attendees some surprising game concepts and designs for Link that preceded The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Two of Nintendo’s earlier concepts for a new Legend of Zelda included a game titled Hyrule Wars and The Legend of Zelda: Invasion. The latter apparently would have seen Link encountering a UFO and some alien enemies.
Before there was #Zelda: Breath of the Wild there was.. Hyrule Wars? And an alien attack!? The early concepts were definitely wild. pic.twitter.com/0vNYFvtrsQ

Nintendo also showed some surprisingly bold variations on Link, including a version of the character wearing a space suit (and flanked by a Metroid!), an idea that may have something to do with that Invasion game. The developers also tried something a bit more modern, including a version of Link wearing jeans, riding a motorcycle and playing a Flying V electric guitar.

Nintendo fans have seen Link riding a motorcycle before, thanks to Mario Kart 8 DLC, but we’re not sure they’re ready to handle The Legend of Zelda: Born to be Wild Link just yet.
