Blizzard Entertainment announced today that Probius, the curious probe, is Heroes of the Storm's newest character. He'll be available to play on the game’s public test realm as of March 6.
For fans unfamiliar with the probe units from StarCraft 2, their primary functions are exactly what you might imagine. Probes gather resources for players but also help set up the necessary structures to create other units. They play an essential role in the game and Probius looks like he’ll be bringing these talents to his teammates in the Nexus.
StarCraft fans might even recognize Probius as the probe in the opening cinematic of StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void.
Blizzard is known for putting main characters in Heroes of the Storm, like Lúcio from Overwatch, but the addition of Probius is interesting. Last year, Blizzard began soliciting designs for Deckard Cain, an NPC from the Diablo universe, following requests from fans to have him as a playable character in Heroes of the Storm. Because Heroes of the Storm utilizes Blizzard’s deep catalog of characters from multiple franchises, it’s no surprise that eventually a character as small as a drone from StarCraft could be featured among the company’s biggest heroes.
