A little over a month ago, Reddit user Naiko32 posted a challenge to the Nintendo Switch subreddit. He had taken a screenshot from one of the many trailers for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The image featured Link running up a massive, precarious, very narrow wooden bridge.
Naiko32’s challenge was simple: On Breath of the Wild’s launch day, March 3, find that bridge and use Link’s shield to surf down it.

Well, that day has arrived, and Reddit user Sylverstone14 has reminded the Switch subreddit of this great challenge. The community has rallied around it, providing a map to the location of the bridge and asking those participating to upload videos of themselves pulling off the task. So far, sadly, no one has gotten to that point — although with a game as big as Breath of the Wild, that may not be shocking.
Shield-surfing is one of the many new elements Breath of the Wild brings to the Zelda series. If main character Link has a shield equipped, a couple of button presses will let him jump into the air, flip the shield beneath him and ride it down a slope. Be careful, though: Riding on top of your shield will degrade it quickly, eventually causing it to break, which will send Link flying flat on his face.
That may be one of the reasons no one has uploaded a video yet — many players are likely still scouring the world for a shield strong enough to last the long ride down this bridge.
It’s a cool challenge, though, and the Nintendo Switch subreddit moderation team is offering a special flair on the site for anyone who uploads a video proving that they pulled it off. We’ll keep watching the thread and maybe give it a try ourselves soon.
