Ms. Pac-Man in Google Maps is today’s best time-waster

Google always comes up with some fun April Fools’ Day gags, and this year, Google Maps is offering another location-based video game: the arcade classic Ms. Pac-Man.

If you open the Google Maps app on a smartphone or tablet today, you’ll see a pinkish-orange button featuring Ms. Pac-Man herself. It’s above the usual “pinpoint my location” button on the right side of the screen. If you tap the button, the app will whisk you to a seemingly random spot somewhere in the world for a game of Ms. Pac-Man. (The Verge reports that you can also play on the web, and that version will let you choose the location.)

We tried starting the game multiple times, and Google Maps sent us all around the globe: Mexico City, Tokyo, Phoenix, Chicago’s Wrigley Field and the Plaça de la Sagrada Família in Barcelona. It will all be familiar to anyone who has ever played a Pac-Man game. You swipe on your screen to send Ms. Pac-Man around the area, snatching up pellets and then eating power pellets so she can consume the four ghosts that are prowling the streets.

This isn’t the first time Google has done something like this. The company overlaid the original Pac-Man atop Google Maps for April Fools’ Day 2015. The year before, Google Maps users could scour the globe for Pokémon.
