Toho Animation released a new video today showing off some of the concept art for its upcoming, animated Godzilla trilogy that’s heading to Netflix at the end of this year.
The trilogy follows a group of humans in 2048 who were able to escape from Earth after Godzilla and other Kaiju managed to wipe out most of the human race. Haruo, the main character in the trilogy, promises to return to Earth and destroy the very monsters that killed his parents 20 years ago. Haruo leads a group of fighters with the same goal back to Earth, but discover that in their years away from the planet, it has aged more than 20,000 years and become Godzilla’s home. They must figure out how to defeat the monster while fighting on his own home turf in order to reclaim the world that was once theirs.

The video shows off concept art for Haruo and other characters in the film, as well as some of the transportation ships used to escape Earth when the attack was at its heaviest. There are also interviews with executive producer Yoshihiro Furusawa, directors Kobun Shizuno and Hiroyuki Seshita, screenwriter Gen Urobuchi and the actor voicing Haruo, Mamoru Miyano.
The first film in the trilogy will be released in Japan this November, with the global distribution being handled by Netflix. It’s unclear if Netflix is going to screen the film for North American and European audiences on the big screen or if it will only be available to stream.
