It’s been known for a while that Charlize Theron would be playing Cipher, the newest villain in the Fast and Furious franchise, but the reason she’s so heavily feared has been kept under wraps for quite some time.
Thanks to the newest trailer, however, Universal Pictures has released a little more information about who Cipher is. Much like Tej Parker (Ludacris), Cipher is a hacker of sorts — but instead of focusing on computers specifically, Cipher is more interested in hacking cars. In the new trailer, Cipher can be seen standing in a control room, watching a large monitor that gives her eyes on the streets. According to a debrief from Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell), she’s the “very definition of high-tech terrorism.”
From her control room, Cipher can hack into any car in the city and use them to her advantage. There are scenes where she starts cars left in showrooms, then drives them onto the streets. The result is a chaotic, massive car chase around the city as vehicles pile up on another and crash into unsuspecting drivers.
The first introduction of what Cipher is capable of can be seen in the GIF below.
As the trailer goes on, Cipher’s abilities become more apparent, but that’s not the only important takeaway. During one of her conversations with Dom (Vin Diesel), she informs him that they’ve crossed paths in Abu Dhabi, London and now Cuba. That means her storyline goes back to Fast and Furious 6 and Fast 7, even though we didn’t see her.
Why is that important? Simply put, that also marks the introduction of Dom and his family’s other adversaries: Deckard (Jason Statham) and Owen Shaw (Luke Evans). We know that in this movie, Deckard is teaming up with Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) to help track down Dom and save him from Cipher, but the question is whether or not Cipher is aware of the Shaw brothers.
It seems like much of her story will incorporate moments from the last two films, but we still don’t know what information she has on Dom to make him betray the rest of his team. Regardless, it’s evident that Cipher — who also takes control of a submarine in Fate of the Furious — will be one of the toughest and most memorable villains yet.
Fate of the Furious hits theaters on April 14. The full trailer for the film can be seen above.
