Fantastic Beasts’ Young Dumbledore has been cast, is on the verge of being memed

The internet didn’t waste any time with this one

Universal Pictures announced today that Jude Law would be taking on the role of a young Dumbledore in the upcoming sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and it’s already caused a ruckus.

No one’s objecting to the casting decision, but the fact that Law will play a younger Dumbledore, after starring as the Young Pope on HBO, has people snickering. A slew of of old Young Pope memes have resurfaced as a reaction to the casting news.

Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts, is one of the most important figures in the Harry Potter series. In Fantastic Beasts, he’ll also play a key role in defeating the evil wizard Grindelwald, played by Johnny Depp.

In the original Harry Potter franchise, Dumbledore is an elderly wizard, full of sage advice for the younger wizards attending his school. In Fantastic Beasts, we’ll see a version of him that hasn’t been on a big screen before. No pressure, Jude.

Still people can’t help themselves wondering if there’s an elaborate universe where the Young Pope was Young Dumbledore all along?

The memes and comparisons will only become more elaborate and frequent once production begins on the sequel and photos of Law are released. Until then, we’ll just have to imagine that he gets to keep his papal vestments heading into the film.

The Fantastic Beasts sequel is slated to be released on Nov. 16, 2018. All of The Young Pope is available to binge on HBO Now.
