The new season of Mystery Science Theater 3000 is finally on Netflix, but if you’re wondering what the show will be like after being off the air for years, creator Joel Hodgson and his team have a special preview to tease what’s to come.
Watch Mystery Science Theater 3000 take on Stranger Things in clip from new season
It’s just so typically ‘80s
The video, seen above, focuses on Stranger Things’ “Chapter One,” but it only lasts a few minutes in length. As Stranger Things fans will know, the series starts with a closeup of Jim Hopper (David Harbour) sleeping. Co-host Jonah Ray and his team of robots immediately start commenting on the “gray-ish, brown-ish world” that belongs to ‘80s cinema and television. Hodgson doesn’t appear in the video, but he is involved with the new season.
Stranger Things’ David Harbour tweeted out the video, calling the “body shaming” video one of the best moments of his career.
Fans of Hodgson’s original series, which riffed on obscure monster movies and ran between 1988 and 1999, will be happy to see that same sense of comedy return to the new series. Ray is perfect co-host, too, picking up on Hodgson’s material and supplementing it perfectly with his own jokes.
Mystery Science Theater 3000, which was acquired by Netflix, and Stranger Things are both properties of the streaming service. The entire new season of Mystery Science Theater 3000 is available to stream now, as is the first season of Stranger Things.
Stranger Things will return for a second season this October.
