The first episode of Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series is out now on PCs and consoles. The game is inspired less by the Marvel movies and more the modern comic books — but fans have uncovered an Easter egg that shows Telltale isn’t afraid to tip its hat to the films as well.
(Here’s the requisite spoiler warning, in case you haven’t seen Guardians of the Galaxy or finished the first Telltale installment yet.)
Lead Guardian Peter “Star-Lord” Quill can check out the computer on his ship’s bridge to find a series of messages. There are some obvious ones from Yondu and Rocket Raccoon, two characters who play important roles in the series. But the third comes from someone named Howard.
It’s Howard the Duck, turns out, the Marvel comics character whose legacy was tainted by an reviled live-action feature film debut. He’s recently found a critical resurgence thanks to Chip Zdarsky and Joe Quinones’ Howard the Duck series of comics, which began in 2015.
Howard’s email is address to Quill, warning him to pass along a message to Rocket — the raccoon still owes him after losing big on their poker night.
Howard the Duck’s appearance is a nod to Marvel fans across media, but it’s also a callback to the Guardians of the Galaxy series’ big-screen debut. During a post-credits scene, the character briefly appears for his first theatrical appearance since his much maligned starring turn. Rocket’s not involved in this scene, which you can watch below, but enjoy some Benicio Del Toro instead:
