Watch 30 minutes of The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind

Vvardenfell has never looked this good

Charlie Hall is Polygon’s tabletop editor. In 10-plus years as a journalist & photographer, he has covered simulation, strategy, and spacefaring games, as well as public policy.

The team at ZeniMax Online Studios invited Polygon into a pre-release version of The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind. We were able to tour the expansion’s faithful recreation of Vvardenfell, last visited by players in The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind. Our clip will take you from the holy city of Vivec to the dusty village of Balmora.

We can safely say that Vvardenfell has never looked so good.

In the video above you can see Zenimax making excellent use of the game’s new facial animation systems, which were brought online after the 2014 release of the original game. The architecture and the game’s lighting are also much more advanced, all thanks to the ongoing improvements made to the game over the last several years.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind takes place 700 years before the events of The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind. The expansion will be available June 6 for Windows PC and Mac, as well as PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It will include the Vvardenfell area, more than 30 hours of gameplay, new player-versus-player content and a new character class called the Warden.
