Now on Nintendo Switch eShop: a rad, retro-style action game for cheap

Kamiko might be the coolest, cheapest game on the console

As Nintendo gears up to release its next major game for Nintendo Switch — ever heard of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe? — the eShop quietly gets a game that’s right up action game fans’ alleys.

Kamiko has been generating buzz since it launched in Japan earlier this month. It’s easy to see why: For one, its original Japanese release comes with an English language option available from the getgo. Since the Switch is region-free, several new release-starved Switch owners picked up Kamiko after its initial release and found a lot to love.

It’s also got a fantastic sense of style that rivals similar 16-bit action games, like Hyper Light Drifter. Combining traditional Japanese Shintoist values with arcade-style action, Kamiko found a fanbase quickly.

The short indie game tasks players — who control the titular priestess Kamiko — to take down demons and complete puzzles along the way, racking up combos and taking in the gorgeous graphical style. At $4.99, it’s an easy sell for Nintendo Switch diehards.

The rest of this week’s new eShop lineup is unsurprisingly light. ACA NEOGEO OVER TOP is the latest classic game to come to Switch; it’s a racing game that sends players through different kinds of areas and weather conditions to make it to the finish line. That one’s going for $7.99.

Between Kamiko and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Switch owners have a pretty good slate of games to add to the backlog — making this one of the most exciting eShop drops since the console launched, brief the lineup may be.
