Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the first major Switch game since the console’s launch, is already the top-selling video game of the year so far on Amazon.
The best-selling gaming products of 2017 aren’t actually games; the top two spots on Amazon’s list are occupied by PlayStation Store gift cards, with $20 at No. 1 and $10 at No. 2. But Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is right behind them in the third slot.
That feat is inherently nothing to sneeze at, but it’s even more impressive with some context. Nintendo just launched Mario Kart 8 Deluxe today, April 28. Amazon updates this particular list daily, so the retailer’s pre-order numbers alone may be entirely responsible for getting the game this high on the list. And the kart racer is doing better than The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which is officially the Switch’s best-selling game at this point; it outdid the console itself in March, with 2.76 million copies sold worldwide.
Remember also that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a full-price re-release of a Wii U game that’s nearly three years old — the original Mario Kart 8 launched in late May 2014. And a lot of people already own it: Mario Kart 8 is by far the best-selling game in Wii U history, with 8.31 million copies sold as of March 31, 2017. But if Amazon’s sales are any indication, the majority of Switch owners may also end up buying Deluxe.
