The Defenders’ fake newspaper provides new clues about Daredevil’s future

What’s going on with our core Defender?

Netflix confirmed yesterday The Defenders would be premiering in August, and used a fake, newspaper-inspired pop up website to do it.

The website, called the New York Bulletin, provided some interesting updates on number of its core Defenders, including Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, but the most telling information centered on Netflix’s first Defender, Daredevil. More specifically, the fake newspaper cover about the “Devil of Hell Kitchen’s” seems to imply that Daredevil has been missing in action for quite some time.

Neither Netflix or Marvel have tried to hide that a big part of Daredevil’s arc when The Defenders starts is that he wants out of the business. Actor Charlie Cox, who plays the superhero, told Entertainment Weekly in January that The Defenders will begin with Daredevil attempting to stay out of crime fighting while at the same time finally meeting up with Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Danny Rand (Iron Fist).

“He took the death of Elektra very badly —I think he feels responsible for that,” Cox said. “He’s perhaps a little bit lost, and the best he can do for now is to not engage in his vigilante activities. When we meet him at the beginning of The Defenders, I’m not sure he’s completely found peace with that idea.”

Also, in the teaser video, Daredevil doesn’t appear in his costume. As one of two Defenders whose costume isn’t just streetwear, this seems to hint that some big changes are in store for him.

More information will be revealed as the premiere date edges closer. The Defenders will be available to stream in full on Aug. 18. Seasons of Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and, of course, Daredevil can be streamed right now.
