Many people have been singing the praises of Nier: Automata, the new action-RPG from Square Enix and PlatinumGames. It has an 88 on Metacritic from reviewers, and Polygon gave it much love in our own review. There’s just one problem, as YouTube creator Skill Up sees it: Nobody loved it enough.
In the lengthy review above — nearly half an hour! — Skill Up delivers an impressive, powerful argument for why you should check out this game. In his view, this is not just a great game, not just an 8 or 9 out of 10, but a masterpiece of the type that will inform and inspire many future games.
Sound like hyperbole? Skill Up admits that maybe he’s overstating the case, that maybe Nier: Automata is in fact “just” a great game. Still, he felt strongly enough that he needed to make sure there was at least one review out there arguing from this perspective.
It’s worth noting that the review is marked as spoiler-free, but it does reveal some fairly big plot and mechanical surprises the deeper it goes. If you haven’t played Automata yet and want to go in completely fresh, you may not want to watch past the first 5 or 10 minutes of this review.
Agree or disagree with Skill Up’s conclusions about the importance and status of Nier: Automata, there’s something delightful about watching someone who completely adores a game dig into extreme detail on why they believe it’s so good. If this doesn’t convince you to at least give Automata a shot, nothing will.
