The Angry Birds Movie 2 is set for a fall 2019 premiere, Rovio Entertainment announced. Although that’s still a ways off, the mobile developer said in a press release that the release date is significant: It coincides with the 10th anniversary of the first Angry Birds game.
It’s a significant landmark in mobile gaming, of which Angry Birds was one of the first big successes. The puzzle-like bird-launching game became a phenomenon not longer after its 2009 debut, spawning numerous sequels and spinoffs, merchandise and the first Angry Birds movie, which was in theaters last summer.
The sequel is out Sept. 20, 2019, with production currently underway. Directing is Thurop Van Orman, best known for his work on both Adventure Time and The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, which he created for Cartoon Network. Rick and Morty’s John Rice will co-direct, adding an extra boost to the crew’s pedigree. (Rice also worked on The Angry Birds Movie.)
Further details are scant. Instead, we see this news as a reminder that just as Angry Birds is nearing the double-digits in age, we, too, grow older and older and older by the day.
