New details about Fire Emblem Warriors, the series’ upcoming Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch hack-and-slash game, are in the latest issue of Famitsu. Among the first look at Warriors’ original protagonists is info about the cast that should please newer Fire Emblem fans about the game’s cast.
Alongside new heroes Shion and Lian, Warriors will feature a roster predominantly made up of characters from Fire Emblem Fates and Fire Emblem: Awakening. These are the most recent mainline entries in the franchise, and arguably the most popular, credited for popularizing the series in the West. The game will also feature characters from Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, the first Fire Emblem title. Shadow Dragon, remade for Nintendo DS in 2008, boasts arguably the series’ most recognizable character: Marth, who’s featured prominently in the Famitsu spread.
Also confirmed for the game is Chrom, who co-starred alongside the player’s customizable avatar in Awakening. (We first saw him in the game’s teaser trailer from January.) Koei Tecmo and Nintendo have yet to reveal anyone else, but the collaborators confirmed that there will be a diverse list of characters in the game, in terms of abilities. It’s possible that characters from other games could appear, but players should expect the vast majority to be a mix of very recent faces.
The reason for that is to make sure the game isn’t just chock full of offense-oriented sword users, as the designers said in Famitsu. Although everyone shown thus far is a swordsman, there will also be magic users and archers in the mix, according to a translation by Gematsu.
Fire Emblem Warriors will also preserve the series’ classic weapon triangle system, which determines what each class of character is strong and weak against. Players who like to get characters to bond with each other will also be able to do that, which results in a series of support conversations.
Fire Emblem Warriors is expected later this year, but Nintendo has yet to announce a release date.
