Some things just take off. Summer songs are like that, and Super Mario Odyssey’s eminently hum-able toe-tapper “I’ll Be Your 1-Up Girl” is how we’ll remember E3 2017. But you know a piece of video game music has really taken hold when fans are covering it, and this game isn’t even out yet. That leads us to “The Team Players,” and their wonderful treatment.
The Team Players are Dani and Mo. One handles the melody, the other takes care of the interpretation of the vocals. If you like their stuff, here is more of it, including a chilled-out cover of the Wii U eShop theme, and a 20-minute tour de force of Undertale’s music.
Super Mario Odyssey is coming Oct. 27 on Nintendo Switch. Pauline, the OG distressed damsel from Donkey Kong, makes her return as mayor of New Donk City; the song was written for her, and is meant to express the character’s interest in jazz. If that’s not your style, The Team Players’ coffeehouse groove is a great substitute.
