Peter Jackson’s new AR studio just showed off its first game

No Lords or Rings were present

Wingnut AR today demonstrated a table-top augmented reality experience at Apple’s Worldwide Development Conference, which will eventually become the studio’s first game.

The demo featured a small bustling town located on a table on stage. A few seconds into the demo, airships began flying in to attack the town. The entire thing was created with Apple’s upcoming ARKit augmented reality developer kit and the Unreal Engine.

During one of the attacks, an AI townsperson ran from danger, only to plummet to his death by falling off the edge of the real-world table.

While the entire scene was viewable through an iPhone, you couldn’t see any of the action without one.

“Wouldn’t it be cool to have airship battles in your own living room?” Alasdair Coull, head of Wingnut AR, said during the demo. Coull was formerly the head of R&D at Weta Digital.

Make sure to check out the entire demo in the video above.
