Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds will add first-person only servers in the next update, a bid to make the already challenging game even harder. In a tweet sent out early this morning, creator Brendan “Playerunknown” Greene said the addition would come along in the next monthly update.
Battlegrounds already offers a first-person and a third-person mode and allows players to switch between them freely. Third-person provides a super-wide perspective for moving around outdoors, while first-person is critical for lining up a shot indoors or around obstacles. Players who don’t know when to use first-person are at a clear disadvantage.
But many in the tactical gaming and milsim community consider third-person to be unrealistic and overly generous. Arma clan leader Andrew "dslyecxi" Gluck, the founder of Shack Tactical and the author of the definitive guide to Arma 3, has a tremendous video that discusses it. But it basically allows people to see around corners and over walls when they otherwise wouldn’t be able to.
The bottom line is that a first-person-only mode will make an already challenging game tremendously more difficult.
The increasingly popular online multiplayer survival shooter keeps piling on features. Battlegrounds developer Bluehole announced a zombie mode and two new maps prior to this year’s E3. Then during E3 it announced a full 3D replay mode, new vaulting and climbing mechanics as well as a version for the Xbox One with enhancements for Xbox One X.
It should come as no surprise then that the game’s exit from early access has been delayed into the fourth quarter of this year.
Fans seem content with the pace of development, however. The game is still selling well and continues to occupy a top spot on Twitch. Bluehole has even inked a deal to bring exclusive content to Facebook.
Battlegrounds’ monthly updates tend to land in the final week of each month, so first-person only servers could arrive as soon as next week.
