Marvel and Oculus are working on a new virtual reality game called Marvel Powers United VR, in which teams of players assume the personae of various Marvel characters and mow down bad guys together using their signature powers and weapons.
In the announcement trailer, three players — a motorcycle repairman, an artist and a business traveler, all very young and attractive — don their secret identities with the Oculus Rift headset and Touch controllers and throw down. Hulk, Rocket Raccoon and Captain Marvel are shown, but it stands to reason the roster will go much deeper. A news release mentioned a mission-based wrapper for the gameplay, and said Marvel villains will appear, too.
A demonstration at the D23 Expo in Anaheim after this video premiered showed the three players working cooperatively from different points of the map, with limited movement, so it seems to be a team-based variant of the rails shooter. Players with ranged abilities project them through their hands; Hulk threw his fists, caught projectiles and hurled them back at the goons.
Perspectives will change according to the character's; Hulk's player will see things from a lot higher angle, and Rocket's will see things from a lower one.
Marvel Powers United is coming in 2018 and will be exclusive to the Oculus Rift.
