Earlier this year, the fighting game community perked up at the possibility of a new fighting game from Arika, the team behind the Street Fighter EX series. The company released a glossy looking trailer (see below) for a new fighting game which unfortunately ended up being a very elaborate April Fool’s joke.
Even the video description itself confirms it was a polished video made just for fun, stating, “These are April Fools' stories and not being officially considered for release at this stage. So even if you contact the official ARIKA Corporation, there is nothing you can do at this time.”
Fans of the developer’s arcade Street Fighter series had their hopes immediately dashed. Although, on stage at Evo 2017, the company released a brand new trailer at the end of the BlazBlue finals. You can see the video embedded at the top of this post.
Thankfully, this game is actually real and coming out soon. The video’s description reads, “ARIKA has decided to begin development on a PlayStation 4 version of ‘Mysterious Fighting Game (Title Undecided)’ and make a public announcement on the final day of EVO2017. This game will be the newest entry in the EX Series.”
Not only will the game likely borrow mechanics from the Street Fighter EX games, but it will also feature some of the game’s characters. Since Arika developed some original fighters for the Street Fighter EX series, it still owns the rights to those characters and they will be a part of this new game.
Mysterious Fighting Game (Title Undecided) is currently in development for PS4 and will have a simultaneous release in North America, Europe and Japan in 2018. The game will feature a limited beta test at the end of 2017. Pre-orders for Japan will be available during the beta test, but details on pre-orders for other regions as well as pre-order bonuses will be announced at a later date.
