As promised last night, the second trailer for Blade Runner 2049 premiered this morning on Good Morning America. It depicts Ryan Gosling, as LAPD Officer K, searching for Deckard, who appears to be hiding out in some kind of replicant commune or concentration camp.
The search for Deckard is a useful context to fill everyone in on what has happened, or what may have happened, in the 30 years between this film’s setting and that of the original Blade Runner. Though there’s plenty of footage seen already in the first trailer released back in May, this does introduce the concept of some kind of replicant commune or concentration camp out in the desert.
The trailer heavily implies that Rick Deckard, reprised by Harrison Ford for Blade Runner 2049, is a replicant, conforming to theories running more than 35 years now. “We were being hunted” is a rather clear statement, especially when paired with the line about scrambling records, but who knows. On the record back in May, director Denis Villeneuve was circumspect about whether his film would directly answer that question.
“We are still exploring the themes of memories and empathy,” Villeneuve said. “That's still part of the deeper tissue ... of where the movie evolves in relation to what does it mean to be human.”
No one expects Villeneuve to spoil his own movie. The buildup through this two-minute trailer suggests K and Deckard are going to find some larger truth that everyone would rather not know about themselves. But that’s life, and perhaps that’s the bigger irony here.
