How do you make Star Wars Battlefront 2’s Janina Gavankar cry? You make her a helmet.
The team here at Polygon spent a good portion of this year’s E3 discussing just how good actor Janina Gavankar was at presenting Battlefront 2. As it turns out, part of the reason she’s so into the role is because she’s a big fan of Star Wars in general, and it showed in more than just her entrance.
Gavankar commissioned a custom dress inspired by her in-game uniform for the occasion. She also had a one-of-a-kind set of earrings 3D printed to match the Inferno Squad’s insignia. But the one thing she didn’t have was a badass Imperial special forces combat helmet.
Electronic Arts asked the prop-making experts at Tested to bang out a top notch replica of the helmet worn by Gavankar’s character, Iden Versio. When they gifted it to her at this year’s D23 conference, she broke out into tears. You can watch the full making-of video on YouTube.
What makes the story even sweeter is how much the fandom has been embracing Gavankar and her role in the upcoming game.
“I’m so happy that people are not trolling me for being as nerdy as I am,” Gavankar told Polygon in an interview over the weekend. “I’ve been really honest and made myself really vulnerable and that can be really dangerous. Because I’ve done that before in Hollywood and that has not gone well for me.”
Star Wars: Battlefront 2 is expected to land on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One on Nov. 17.
