Middle-earth: Shadow of War trailer asks if Shelob is friend or foe

Can she be trusted?

Shelob, the fearsome giant spider who nearly kills both Frodo and Sam in The Lord of the Rings, appears to be a major character in Monolith Productions’ Middle-earth: Shadow of War, according to a new trailer.

The trailer, which debuted during the San Diego Comic-Con panel for Shadow of War, introduces Shelob — but she only appears as her spider self briefly at the beginning and end. Instead, Monolith has given the deadly arachnid a human form: a beautiful woman in a black dress.

Shelob is described in J.R.R. Tolkien’s books as a malevolent spirit in spider form, so who’s to say what she actually looks like? Either way, in Shadow of War, she entices the main character, Talion, with visions of what may come to pass. Talion apparently comes to believe that her glimpses of the future are the only way to save the city of Minas Ithil and the race of men. But Celebrimbor, the wraith who is Talion’s partner — and the elf who originally forged the three elven Rings of Power — doesn’t think Talion should trust Shelob.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War is set for release Oct. 10 on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. It will support the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X, running in native 4K on Microsoft’s upcoming console. For more, check out our hands-on impressions from E3.
