Nintendo Switch sells another 2 million as company profit surges

The Nintendo Switch has sold 4.7 million units so far and Arms has already sold one million copies, according to the quarterly earnings statement Nintendo provided to investors.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, both launch (or launch window) titles, have sold 3.9 million and 3.5 million copies worldwide, respectively. Arms, which launched June 16 and barely made it inside the reporting window, moved 1.18 million units. Nintendo's newest release, Splatoon 2, launched July 21 and did not make the cut for reporting.

Nintendo's last quarterly report said it sold 2.74 million Switches in the first month of its launch. That means Nintendo has sold 2 million units from April to the end of June. The company maintains its estimate of moving 10 million consoles within a year of its launch (by March 2018). By comparison, the Wii U sold 13.56 million consoles between its 2012 launch and 2016 discontinuation.

The New Nintendo 2DS XL launched in Australia and New Zealand in mid-June, accounting for 20,000 units sold. The rest of its sales aren’t reported as its worldwide launch came in mid-July.

The Switch's debut has, unsurprisingly, boosted Nintendo's third quarter net sales, gross profit and operating profit to four-year highs (comparing the same quarter on Nintendo's fiscal calendar). In April, the company told investors it expected that the 2018 fiscal year would see the company's highest operating profit since 2011.
