First look at FLCL’s return promises a totally new take

Ride on, shooting star

All-time anime classic FLCL — pronounced “Fooly Cooly” — is coming back for two more seasons next year, airing exclusively on Toonami. First announced last year, the show’s first teaser hit the late-night anime block’s Facebook page, just after its premiere at this year’s Anime Expo.

The 12-episode revival will be split into two parts: FLCL 2 and FLCL 3, with a debut dated for 2018. Don’t expect the strange, stylish action show to be totally the same after an 18-year hiatus: Although pink-haired alien Haruko is back at the helm, other characters — namely her teen companion Naota, the real star of the original series — have been replaced. FLCL 2 and 3 are also produced by Production I.G. (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) and Studio Bones (Fullmetal Alchemist), not Gainax like the original season.

One other important thing remains the same, at least, and that’s the music. The Pillows will be back to score both halves of the new FLCL, so we all have more J-Rock earworms to look forward to.
