Revisit the early days of Ash and Pikachu’s beautiful friendship in 90 seconds

A new trailer for the next Pokémon movie piles on all the feelings

The 20th Pokémon feature film is out next week in Japan, which means it’s time for at least one more trailer. Our latest look at I Choose You revisits some of the most emotional beats from the start of Ash and Pikachu’s lifelong friendship, all scored with one heck of a heartbreaking song.

I Choose You serves as a reimagining of the Pokémon cartoon’s earliest episodes, and this trailer is full of memorable moments. It’s always strange to think that Ash and Pikachu took a while to warm up to each other, but the video makes sure to remind us of that. Pikachu shocked Ash on their first meeting; Ash dragged the stubborn Pikachu through Viridian Forest on a leash in another seemingly out-of-character scene.

But all of that happened in the original show too, as Pokémon fans will remember. And what’s even better is what happened next: Ash saved Pikachu from a pack of Spearow and Fearow, a major turning point in their friendship. That’s the part of the trailer where viewers will probably get teary-eyed.

Seeing Ash and Pikachu become best friends forever is a nostalgic, heartwarming journey — made even more so by the song choice. That dramatic theme is called “Theme of Oracion — Let’s Walk Together,” a piece originally used for the movie Pokémon: The Rise of Darkrai. It’s not clear why throwing it back to that 2007 film is significant, but this song sure does get the waterworks going.

There’s no word on when we’ll get I Choose You in English, but we’ll have tissues ready for its release.
