Funcom’s 2012 massively multiplayer conspiracy game The Secret World rebooted in June as Secret World Legends. Funcom announced today that the relaunch will soon be followed up with a new TV series based on the game’s universe.
Also called The Secret World, the show follows an elite squad of undercover agents caught in a war between three secret societies and a Lovecraftian horde of monsters from other dimensions. In a news release, Funcom says the show’s plot “incorporates the realms of ancient myths and legends as well as today’s conspiracy theories and headline news.”
Pam Veasey of CSI: NY and CSI: Cyber will serve as showrunner and producer. James V. Hart, screenwriter of Hook and Contact, wrote the pilot along with Jake Hart. Producer Gudrun Giddings of G4C Innovation, along with Sam Sarkar, optioned the media rights for The Secret World upon its launch in 2012. The show will also be produced by Johnny Depp and Christi Dembrowski’s company, Infinitum Nihil.
Secret World Legends rebuilt the original game’s combat, visuals and story progression. Funcom CEO Rui Casais said after the relaunch that “It has been years since we last saw a surge in player activity like this in the Secret World universe.”
