Sonic Mania is a love letter to its Sega Genesis era predecessors. The aesthetics, music and levels all feel like a blast from the past. So it’s no surprise that the game also keeps its traditions by adding a level select, sound test and debug menu right from the start.
Thankfully, you won’t need to unlock anything to access these features; they’re available right from the title screen. Here’s how to access the level select, sound test and debug mode in Sonic Mania.

The easiest way to access Sonic Mania’s level select is to exit out of the main menu (where you can select your different modes) to head back to the title screen. As the title screen is loading up, press and hold the following buttons until the “press any button” prompt appears:
Nintendo Switch: B + Y
PlayStation 4: Unconfirmed but we’ll update soon
Xbox One: Unconfirmed but we’ll update soon
PC: Unconfirmed but we’ll update soon
Keep the buttons held down until the “press any button” prompt appears, hit a button and then you’ll be sent to level select mode. Easy!
Once in level select mode, you can access any level in a “non-save” mode, meaning that any progress you do in this mode won’t be saved. To change characters on the Switch, press Y to cycle between Sonic, Tails or Knuckles. When Sonic is selected, press X to add Tails (other systems will be updated once we confirm).
How to access Sonic Mania’s sound test
Once you’re in the level select, simply scroll to the bottom and you’ll have access to Sonic Mania’s sound test.
How to access Sonic Mania’s debug mode
Accessing Sonic Mania’s debug mode is simple as well. Once in a stage you’ve selected from the level select, simple hit X on the Switch (other platforms to be confirmed) and you’ll enter the debug mode. For more on how to use this mode, check out our guide on Sonic Mania’s debug mode.
