Fear Effect Reinvented, a remake of the cult classic action game, will launch on PC and consoles in 2018. Indie developer Sushee is working on the project with publishing help from Square Enix Collective, which focuses on smaller games.
The first teaser for Fear Effect Reinvented shows that Sushee is preserving the first game’s unique visual style. Expect an upgraded take on Fear Effect’s celebrated cel-shaded graphics and fixed camera angles, as well as the original’s clunky controls.
The original Fear Effect was a PlayStation exclusive that launched in 2000. The story followed a trio of mercenaries as they went on global missions, intent on rescuing their boss’ daughter. Eidos Interactive published the title, which was developed by Kronos Digital Entertainment. A single sequel followed in 2001.
In an interview with GameIndustry.biz, various members of Sushee explained that this remake is looking to the Fear Effect fandom community for guidance. The studio is joined by fellow fans Forever Entertainment for additional help on the project.
It helps that Sushee is also working on the crowdfunded Fear Effect Sedna, a new, isometric installment of the game that trades the action gameplay for a tactical focus. Fear Effect Sedna is expected to launch in 2018.
We should see Fear Effect Reinvented — which won’t rely on Kickstarter for financial assistance, unlike Sedna — sometime after that. It’s due out on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One in 2018.
