Who could have predicted that a Microsoft Zune would be important again?
[Warning: The following contains spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.]
At the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Peter “Star-Lord” Quill can be seen with a Zune MP3 player given to him by the late Yondu. It’s a heartwarming scene, with a little bit of humor thrown in, but it didn’t seem very important by the time the movie had come to an end.
In a Facebook Live Q&A today, director James Gunn said that the Zune will play a very important role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Much like how Meredith, Quill’s late mother, used her song choices to communicate with Quill, Yondu will use the Zune playlist to achieve the same goal.
“Spoiler spoiler spoiler [yes, he did say that], the song choices in Vol. 3 will be Yondu communicating with Peter,” Gunn said.
By the end of the sequel, Yondu and Quill had put aside their differences, and Peter learned the true reason Yondu decided to keep him aboard his ship. His death affected Peter, and the Zune became one of the last connections Quill has to his surrogate father. With this new Zune playlist, Gunn has ensured that Yondu’s legacy will live on. Gunn turned what could have been a throwaway scene into something sincere and purposeful.
Still, Gunn didn’t hint at what that playlist looks like or what songs will appear in the movie. The playlists have become an essential part of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. For Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Gunn and his team managed to get actor David Hasselhoff to star in a ‘70s-inspired disco video for an original song that appeared on the soundtrack.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is currently available to purchase on Blu-ray or through digital download. The full Q&A video can be seen below.
