Game of Thrones actors agree that latest romance is disturbing, but beautiful

‘It’s not good, but it should be, but it’s not!’

Game of Thrones’ biggest “will they, won’t they” couple reached their inevitable conclusion this season, and just about everyone involved has feelings about the complex union.

[Warning: The following contains spoilers for Game of Thrones season 7.]

By the end of the show’s recent season finale, Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen had fallen into bed together. It was an inevitable moment, as they were drawn to each other from their very first meeting, but it didn’t help ease any of the squeamishness that arose from watching an aunt and her nephew participate in the throes of love. Even the couple’s biggest shippers pointed out that the only way to enjoy them was to distance their love from their familial connection — similar to what Jaime and Cersei Lannister shippers have had to do season after season.

It turns out we’re not the only ones slightly perturbed by Dany and Jon — so are Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington, the actors who play the respective characters. In a new behind-the-scenes video from HBO, Clarke and Harington spoke about filming and watching the scene.

“For us as actors, it’s just weird,” Clarke says. “The reality of what they are to each other? I don’t know how that’s gonna ... I think that’s kind of ... [Clarke makes a disgusted face and disgruntled sound]. That’s going to be the reaction.”

Harington is a little more understanding of the situation. He says in the video that it was inevitable from about halfway through the season that the two would end up together in bed. After dealing with everything they went through and relying on each other, respecting the other’s strength and vision for the future, they couldn’t possibly fight back those feelings.

That didn’t stop Harington from joking around with Clarke on set during the scene, though. Harington said he would often stop to give Clarke a disgusted face, which can be seen below, to take the tension out of the situation.

Like he always does in Game of Thrones, Peter Dinklage had the best response. The actor, who plays Tyrion Lannister on the show, said that because we’re aware of who Jon and Daenerys are to each other, we don’t even get a chance to admire how beautiful it really is. In that way, Dinklage said, it’s a typical, definable Game of Thrones moment.

“It’s not good, but it should be, but it’s not,” Dinklage said, laughing.

There’s no question that Bran Stark will tell Jon and Daenerys what he saw in his vision of Jon’s birth. The young Stark will inform the King in the North that Jon’s real name is Aegon Targaryen, the rightful heir to the Iron Throne and a man who just made love to his aunt.

Game of Thrones will return sometime in either 2018 or 2019.
