Spelunky creator’s next project is 50 rad retro games in one

UFO 50 collection is a retro-flavored 8-bit bonanza

If you’ve noticed indie developers teasing #UFO50 on Twitter lately, but didn’t know what the hell they were talking about, well, consider that mystery solved. UFO 50 is a collection of 50 games from five indie game developers, and it’s coming in 2018.

UFO 50’s batch of games includes side-scrolling shooters, platformers, puzzle games, dungeon crawlers and sports games. The collection will feature both single-player and multiplayer games.

Spelunky creator Derek Yu (aka Mossmouth) is publishing UFO 50 next year, first on PC. Joining Yu on the project are Eirik Suhrke, Jon Perry, Paul Hubans and Ojiro Fumoto, whose work includes Downwell, Ridiculous Fishing, Time Barons, Scorpulak and Madhouse.

According to the official UFO 50 website, the collection will feature retro-style games that “were all created in the 80's by a fictional company that was obscure but ahead of its time.” The games are unified by a “unique 32-color palette and other restrictions we decided on to make them feel more authentic,” the developers said.

The 50 titles are “full games and not microgames or minigames,” but “slightly smaller than commercial 8-bit titles” from the 1980s. Mossmouth says the entire collection could take more than 100 hours to play through.
