Sonic Mania brings back Sonic 2’s competitive multiplayer

Check out first footage of Competition Mode

Sonic Mania is bringing back another Sonic the Hedgehog classic: competition mode. Similar to the two-player mode that was introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic Mania’s competitive multiplayer mode will let players go head-to-head in local races.

Competition mode in Sonic Mania will see players battling for position, rings and power-ups in classically squashed split-screen multiplayer. Players will be able to select from Sonic, Tails and Knuckles in races, and determine the number of rounds and which power-ups are permitted.

Check out first gameplay from Sonic Mania competition mode in the trailer above — and footage of the game’s bonus and special stages below.

Sonic Mania, from Sega, Headcannon and PagodaWest Games, is coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One on Aug. 15.
