Update (5:20 p.m. ET): Ubisoft just issued us the following statement: “For users who may have experienced system crashes related to Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege, SIE has addressed the issue and impacted users should restart their PS4. If problems persist, please contact @AskPlayStation.”
A Ubisoft representative on the subreddit added, “As a result of the aforementioned issue, we will be activating a 50% Renown Bonus Event for the next 24 hours.”
Original post: A PSA for those of you who play Rainbow Six Siege on PlayStation 4 with friends: Following the game’s last update, initiating a party invitation while in the game will crash your console. Best case scenario, you haven’t downloaded the patch or, you have, and haven’t played it. Worst case scenario, according to some, is you’ve corrupted your console’s hard drive.
The Rainbow Six Siege subreddit is offering this advice:
If possible, do NOT download the update.
If you have downloaded it, do NOT launch Siege until further information is available.
If for some reason you still want to play, do NOT, under any circumstance, try to invite players to your party.
Both Ubisoft and Sony are aware of the issue and working towards a solution.

Players have reported a crashing issue regarding the party invitation. We are cooperating with Sony on this issue and would advise you to not use this feature until a resolution is found.

There’s some debate about how deleterious this bug is, with some users reporting a simple crash and restart while others report a need to rebuild the console’s database, a relatively simple affair. Others still suggest something more destructive, like the console restarting repeatedly, though that does not appear to be the norm.
Here’s a video of a PS4 crashing when accessing the console’s friends menu outside of Rainbow Six:
Some people suggest it’s a Sony issue at its root, not a Rainbow Six issue. Rainbow Six Siege community manager Matthew Szep has an update on the game’s official subreddit: “Team is working on it. Hang tight and we'll have a more detailed update as soon as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
When reached for comment, a Ubisoft spokesperson said, “We are aware of an issue impacting PS4 players concerning the party invitation feature and are working to resolve the issue. We advise players not to use this feature until a resolution is found.”
