The trailer for Ex Machina director Alex Garland’s next movie, Annihilation, is here.
Annihilation, which stars Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, Oscar Isaac and Gina Rodriguez, follows an unnamed biologist (played by Portman) who goes searching for her missing husband. Her trek brings her to an environmental disaster zone where she encounters life forces no one was prepared for. The biologist is joined by an anthropologist, psychologist, and surveyor.
Garland’s movie is an adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer’s 2014 novel of the same name. When Garland first started talking to VanderMeer about the adaptation, he was aware that the author had plans to turn it into a trilogy, but there was only one book at the time. Garland hasn’t said if there is interest in adapting the other two books at this point.
Garland started making waves in the film industry in 2014 following the release of Ex Machina. The film, which also starred Isaac, focused on an advanced version of humanoid artificial intelligence. Ex Machina was nominated for two Oscars and won an award for Best Achievement in Visual Effects.
Annihilation is set to be released on Feb. 23, 2018, just one week after Marvel’s Black Panther comes out.
