Thor: Ragnarok will be a complete “destruction of the old and a rebirth of the new” for both the characters in the movie and the franchise at large.
In a new behind-the-scenes video, director Taika Waititi spoke about how exciting it was for him to come into the franchise and have creative freedom with the movie.
“The way that I’ve approached this is to rebuild it in a new way,” Waititi said. “I want to take people on a ride and inject some comedy into it; an adventure that keeps people laughing along the way, but also has the spectacle and stuff that keeps people laughing along the way.”
When Waititi spoke to Polygon last year, the director addressed working with Disney on the project and the expectations the studio had for him going in.
“I feel like a guest in Marvel's universe but with the creative freedom to do what I want,” Waititi said, adding that he loved working with Marvel but missed the intimacy of a smaller cast, while admitting that he couldn’t “turn away from making them [independent movies] for the rest of my life.”
Actor Chris Hemsworth feels the same way about Thor’s new outlook. Hemsworth said Ragnarok feels renewed and fresh because of the change in direction for the character. Everything from the clothes, weapons and noticeably shorter hair makes the third film feel different than the first two installments. Unlike Thor and Thor: The Dark World, Ragnarok will have an equal amount of comedy interwoven into the cinematic battles and dramatic arc developments.
“In this film, we wanted to strip it back and have more fun with it,” Hemsworth said. “Tonally, this is the perfect mix for where this character and story need to go.”
The behind-the-scenes featurette doesn’t include any new, noteworthy scenes, but there are some adorable moments shared between Hemsworth and his co-stars, Tom Hiddleston (Loki) and Mark Ruffalo (Hulk).
Thor: Ragnarok will be released on Nov. 3.
