Capybara Games, the studio known for Super Time Force, Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes and the indefinitely delayed Below, is back with its first new project in nearly four years. OK K.O.! Let’s Play Heroes, a beat-’em-up developed in collaboration with Cartoon Network Games based on the TV series, will launch this January.
Let’s Play Heroes will launch on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One on Jan. 23. The game is set in the world of OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes, starring superhero-in-training K.O. and his fellow fighters as they roam around a strip mall. The series’ mix of action and slacker comedy makes it a unique, fitting series in the Cartoon Network lineup. (It helps that creator Ian Jones-Quartey made a name for himself with Steven Universe, a cartoon that manages a similar balance.)
The trailer above shows off how Capy Games reproduced the art style of the TV series, which premiered in August 2017. The 2.5D adventure game manages to mirror the cartoon better than almost any licensed title I’ve ever seen — with plenty of perspective switches for cutscenes and brawler battles.
“OK K.O.! Let’s Play Heroes was an amazing collaboration with Ian, Toby & CN Games,” Capy Games president Nathan Vella told Polygon. “It has the CAPY spirit — it’s odd and kooky and fun and beautiful. We’re really excited to share our unique blend of brawler, adventure game, card collector and playable cartoon show.”
I got to go hands on with Let’s Play Heroes at E3 2017 and came away impressed by how Capy infused a bit of itself into this exciting cartoon adaptation. I haven’t seen much of the cartoon it’s based on, but I’m stoked to check out more of Let’s Play Heroes later this month.
