Monster hunting is a heavy business, which may explain why life seems to be weighing on Henry Cavill, in this first look at the actor as Geralt in Netflix’s adaptation of The Witcher.
Netflix announced that the Justice League star would be joining the series in September, as the industry debated over whether he’d return to the role of Superman in DC’s movie universe. Cavill’s place in that franchise remains a mystery, but The Witcher isn’t waiting for an answer: The series, based on writer Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels and adapted by writer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich (Marvel’s Daredevil, Umbrella Academy), begins shooting this month in Hungary.
How The Witcher series would sit alongside the novels and games remains ambiguous, but Netflix’s logline sounds mostly faithful to the series both readers and fans of the video game adaptations adore.
The Witcher is an epic tale of fate and family. Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.
Joining Cavill are Freya Allan (The War of the Worlds, Bluebird) as Ciri, and Anya Chalotra (Wanderlust, The ABC Murders) as Yennefer. Additional cast includes Jodhi May (Game of Thrones) as Queen Calanthe, Björn Hlynur Haraldsson (Fortitude) as Eist, Adam Levy (Knightfall) as Mousesack, MyAnna Burig (Ripper Street) as Tissaia and many more.
The Witcher is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2019.
