Super Smash Bros. roster set without Waluigi, majorly bumming out his fan

Surprise reveal hoped for, doesn’t happen

Today’s Super Smash Bros. Direct quickly answered the question of whether Waluigi would finally be a playable fighter in the game: No.

The bad news came six minutes, 22 seconds into the broadcast. “That’s all the fighters you’ll find in the game,” director Masahiro Sakurai said gravely, after introducing Street Fighter’s Ken and the Pokémon Incineroar as the 73rd and 74th characters of the now-complete roster.

Waluigi fans (this assumes there are two or more) had hoped for a surprise announcement, following a summer in which he was humiliated in the game’s E3 2018 trailer. Sakurai also delivered an August update with a pair of purple and yellow chairs in the background.

As they have since the game’s reveal, the fan(s) made their dismay about Waluigi’s confirmed absence known.

Is there a chance the annoying butthole could get in via DLC? Well, yes, there will be five “fighter packs” rolling out through February 2020, delivering a total of five new fighters. That means there are five more chances for Waluigi to not get into the lineup.

Wario’s tennis partner has appeared only as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl (2008) and Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS (2014). Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the series’ debut on Nintendo Switch, and it will feature every playable fighter from the series’ past, plus 11 totally new fighters.
