The first full-length trailer for True Detective season three is here, and it looks like the series is headed back to its roots with an interrogation heavy story.
This season looks like it will center on Mahershala Ali’s Detective Wayne Hays, as he’s haunted by a case he couldn’t solve back in the 1980s. It looks like season three will focus mostly on Ali’s character and will follow along with him in two, maybe even three, different timelines, unlike the previous two seasons.
Based on the trailer’s YouTube description, the show will also be headed for an entirely new setting: America’s heartland. The case that haunts Detective Hays is the “disappearance of two kids in the heart of the Ozarks.” Just based on the trailer, this already looks like a welcome return to the unsettling rural calm of the first season, rather than the fictional industrial California town of Vinci where season two was set.
Starring alongside Ali, who won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 2016 for Moonlight, is Carmen Ejogo (Selma, It Comes at Night). The season will once again be written by series creator Nic Pizzaloto, while the first two of the season’s eight episodes will be directed by Green Room’s Jeremy Saulnier.
True Detective season three will debut on HBO Jan. 13.
