Ryan Gilliam (he/him) has worked at Polygon for nearly seven years. He primarily spends his time writing guides for massively popular games like Diablo 4 & Destiny 2.

During the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2018, Blizzard Entertainment unveiled a mobile game in the Diablo franchise. Diablo: Immortal is an RPG for mobile devices, coming to both Android and iOS.

Immortal, built by Blizzard and Netease Games, will take place between Diablo 2 and Diablo 3, and tells the story of what happened after Tyrael shattered the world stone. Blizzard game designer Wyatt Cheng said the time period in Diablo’s history will be “our chance to explore 20 years of untold stories.”

Most of the Diablo 3 classes are playable, including the Necromancer and excluding the Witch Doctor. The game itself appears to play much like Diablo 3 on PC and console — although classes seem to have different abilities. Heroes will be able to dive into new arenas and dungeons to slay demons in a top down perspective.

The game is also fully multiplayer, with larger groups of players being able to inhabit the same space at once, working together to take down demons in Diablo’s horde. More information on Diablo: Immortal will be revealed as BlizzCon continues.

At launch, the game will have eight unique zones to play in, such as Zoltun Kulle’s library and the Frozen Tundra, Blizzard announced. Immortal will be updated regularly, with more content being added over time.

Outdoor zones in Diablo: Immortal will be shared, meaning that any player can pop in and help attack monsters that respawn after a time. Dungeons are a different kind of experience in Immortal; they’re instanced, four-player experiences. These will have a specific number of enemies and difficult bosses.

Westmarch — the destroyed city from Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls — will be the capital city in Immortal. The city will still be filled with life in Immortal, having not yet been destroyed by Malthael. Players can group together in Westmarch, as well as purchase loot from vendors.

The six player classes all seem to play relatively similarly to how they do in Diablo 3. Signature abilities, like the Barbarian’s Whirlwind, remain, while some new abilities — like being able to pick up and throw a demon into a crowd — will be available as well. The team at Blizzard also hinted that classes like the Witch Doctor from Diablo 3 and the Assassin from Diablo 2 could be added in the future.

Diablo: Immortal is controlled using an on-screen, virtual controller. Players are able to move with the left thumbstick while simultaneously aiming their skills. They will have access to 12 skills per class, with five active at once. The game will also contain the franchise’s legendary gear items that have the potential to alter the way classes play.

Update (Nov. 2): We’ve added additional details about Diablo: Immortal’s gameplay above.
