More than five years after it was first announced, development on Kingdom Hearts 3 has wrapped, game director Tetsuya Nomura said today. And after a series of delays, it appears the game will make its previously announced Jan. 29, 2019 release date.
Nomura confirmed the game’s completion in a tweet posted to the official Kingdom Hearts Twitter account. Square Enix also released the “Together” cinematic trailer for Kingdom Hearts 3, which has been playing in movie theaters. The trailer highlights the new and returning worlds featured in the new Kingdom Hearts, including those based on Frozen, Hercules, Toy Story and Pirates of the Caribbean.
In his tweet, Nomura also recommends playing (or replaying) the previous games in the franchise to prepare for Kingdom Hearts 3’s launch. Square Enix recently released a compilation called Kingdom Hearts: The Story So Far for PlayStation 4 that includes every relevant piece of Kingdom Hearts story content in a single set. The package collects both Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix and Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, which features eight games and one movie.
Kingdom Hearts 3 will be released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
