The trailer for the new Fruits Basket anime is beautiful

The series returns next year

Funimation dropped the first trailer for the upcoming Fruits Basket anime last week, and it’s wonderful.

It’s also wonderfully short, for those of us with other Monday morning obligations. Watch above to see Tohru Honda — our bright-eyed, bushy-tailed protagonist — with a lovely update for 2019. She’s ready to again join the mysterious, transforming Sohma family, a group of people cursed to shapeshift into members of the zodiac upon the embrace of the opposite sex. When Tohru loses her mother and home, she finds a new one with them, which comes with its own challenges. (Many of them are romantic, because teens.)

We’ve also got a glimpse at her new roommates, four main members of the Sohma family: Ayame, Yuki, Kyo and Shigure. They adopt Tohru at the very beginning of the story; that’s where this new Fruits Basket anime begins, and Funimation promises that the series will see the entire storyline through, unlike the original adaptation.

Fruits Basket will stream exclusively on Funimation Now starting next year. If you need something to watch immediately, check our list of the best anime of 2018.
