Play DayZ’s 1.0 version for free all weekend on Steam

‘Any freebies in Cherno?’

Bohemia Interactive

After a long and winding road, DayZ is out now on Steam with a feature-complete 1.0 version. To celebrate, the team at Bohemia Interactive is making it free-to-play all weekend on Steam.

Created in 2012 by a member of the New Zealand army, the DayZ mod became a kind of phenomenon. It launched the aging infantry simulation Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead to the top of Steam, accounting for over half a million concurrent players at its height. That success prompting BI to spin the mod off as its own stand-alone product. Launched as one of Steam’s second wave of big Early Access titles in December 2013, it sold over a million copies in four weeks.

Despite being the game that inspired the creation of titles such as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite Battle Royale, the game’s player base has dwindled somewhat over its protracted development period. The 1.0 release and the free weekend combined is bound to spur some interest, so get in while the getting is good.

The game is also available in an unfinished format on Xbox One, and set for a release on PlayStation 4 next year.
