The first trailer for the Hellboy reboot is here — and trying to bring the fire.
This isn’t, of course, the first film adaption of the Hellboy comics; Guillermo del Toro co-wrote and directed Hellboy (2004) and its sequel Hellboy 2: The Golden Army (2008). The reboot film comes in the wake of del Toro’s hopes to make a third Hellboy sequel. However, the third installment was eventually canceled, giving way to the grungier, action-forward reboot film.
The trailer provides a glimpse of David Harbour (Stranger Things) sporting Mike Mignola’s iconic Hellboy design. The film focuses on Hellboy as he squares off against the medieval sorceress Nimue the Blood Queen, who is hellbent on destroying mankind. The film also stars Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil) as Nimue; Ian McShane (American Gods) as Trevor Bruttenholm, head of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense; Sasha Lane (American Honey) as Alice Monaghan, a love interest of Hellboy’s in the comics; and Daniel Dae Kim (Lost) as Ben Daimio (a role that was recast after Ed Skrein stepped away amidst claims that the role was being whitewashed).
In preview of what to expect from the new Hellboy film in terms of tone and style, screenwriter Andrew Cosby called the movie “a darker, more gruesome version of Hellboy.” He furthers, “Neil [Marshall] said from the very beginning that he wanted to walk a razor’s edge between between horror and comic book movie.”
Hellboy will premiere in theaters on April 12, 2019.
